On this day in 1947, Thor Heyerdahl and five companions began a journey on the Kon-Tiki raft that lasted for 101 days over 4,300 miles across the Pacific Ocean and ended with landfall on a reef at Raroia in the Tuamotu Islands on August 7, 1947.
