Sara Josephine Baker was a pioneer in child welfare and public health. Through her methods infant deaths in New York City dropped by over 1200 cases in a single year. Among her other accomplishments were the establishment of publicly funded milk clinics, the licensing of midwives and the education of mothers in the use of silver nitrate to prevent blindness in their newborn children. She was born on this day in 1873.
