On this day in 1824, the Rensselaer School was founded in Troy, N.Y., by Stephen van Renssalaer; becoming the first engineering college in the U.S. It opened on 3 Jan 1825, with "the purpose of instructing persons, who may choose to apply themselves, in the application of science to the common purposes of life."
